Well, 8859-1 became a ISO standard in 1987.

And, outside European cultture, not used at all.

Code 255 must be stable to transport normal text in the 8859 series.

In some area of Europe, may be.

But, 8BITMIE SMTP is a lot more stable transport for 0-255 text.

How big a problem is this?

Not at all, unless you mind broken transports.
