Well the behaviour now described in RFC 2822 is precisely what Netnews
systems have been doing since time immemorial (which means at least RFC
1036, and maybe earlier).


Only if you're dealing with software that follows RFC 2822. And even then it is
only a SHOULD, not a MUST. Like it or not, the bulk of the world's email
software was written before RFC 2822 was even on the drawing board.

But the bulk of the world's email software treats that SHOULD as a DON'T
BOTHER :-( . It's really only mailing lists and news, where threads tend
to become long, that the feature becomes important.
