Even if we agree that the ultimate successor to RFC 822 should not say
anything about whether X- fields are good, or what they might be good
for, that still leaves an open question:
RFC 822 makes a promise that fields beginning with X- will never be
standardized. If RFC 822 is truly obsoleted by a document that doesn't
restate that promise, then the promise will have been lost; the IETF
will have effectively reclaimed the right to go back on its word. Is
that the intention?
If not, then the successor to 822 needs at least one sentence saying
that fields beginning with X- will never be standardized. It doesn't
need to say why.
