"obsoleted" is not a formal action, it's just a label put on by the
RFC Editor. and as in this case, it is sometimes misleading.

My view is that the text in RFC 822 stands until it is formally and
explicitly changed.

Okay, if a successor to 822 becomes a Standard and if 822 becomes
Historic, and if the new document does not restate the promise,
then the promise will have been effectively rescinded.  Is that the
intended vision of the future?  Do people expect 822 to become Historic
eventually, or to remain a Standard coexisting with the new Standard?
