It's a pain to do, and it can get my mail server shut down if I make a mistake. That's not a very complex piece of psychology.

Show me a risk-free, automatic process to do it, and then you'll have some takers. Please do not assume that everyone fighting spam is sitting around with spare IP addresses and lots of free time.

OK. Run your MTA with delivery stopped and write software that recognizes relay tests of your IP and delivers those. To make it even safer write software that does that just once per day, maximum.

I responded off list since this reply initially came there without a cc. But for a basic summary. I think running relay traps is a fine idea. Until there's software and an automatic way to do it, I don't think it will be common enough to have any impact at all on spammers. And if it does have an impact, it's likely to turn into another tit-for-tat war. That said, I'd love to see either such software, some numbers on how many traps we'd need, or a proposal for how such software would work. But, "this works great for me, but I do it by hand" isn't really enough to work with.

I'm not sure which upsets me more: that people are so unwilling to accept
responsibility for their own actions, or that they are so eager to regulate
everyone else's.
