Re: [Asrg] Adding a spam button to MUAs

2009-12-09 17:25:30
When setting up mail server IMAP & POP3 settings there could be 'Spam
reporting' options available - for IMAP this would presumably be the
folder where junk is placed to be reported; for POP3 this might just
be a checkbox to say that a JUNK command is implemented as John
suggests.

POP and IMAP both have capability commands which allow the MUA to ask
the server what options it supports, so if we go this route, the MUA
support could be entirely automatic with the junk button appearing on
any mailboxes whose servers support the needed features.

I'm still wondering wither an IMAP spam folder and a POP
something-or-other option have any chance of gaining traction.

An MTA providing a junk/spam reporting function might choose to keep
[a copy of] all messages for at least a few days so that UIDLs refer
to messages available to the MTA.

It's a reasonable thought, although the POP spec says quite clearly
that once the message is deleted from the server, the UIDL is no
longer valid. It'd be a significant change to POP.

R's,
John
