While I am sure that Russ can speak for himself, I would like to just
add something I heard very clearly from him at the beginning at the BoF.
What he said, as I recall, was that the first technology in this space
that gets chartered will raise the bar for all others. The question for
the group was whether DKIM should be that technology, and that was the
focus of the discussion.

I'm not looking for DKIM to be a silver bullet that solves all
problems. I think DKIM, in general, looks very promising.

The one killer as far as I'm concerned, however, is the license.

For a core technology like this, I think it is critical that any
patent license must be usable in all major MTAs, both comercial, and
open source.

Now if I remember correctly, at the BOF it was announce that the
updated license would be available around Sep 9th. I realize that
there isn't much that can be done until then. However, until that
time I think it is important to keep all technologies on the table,
especially ones that don't require any patent license.

So, I, personally, intend to keep the discussions more general and not
focus exclusively on DKIM.
