There is a survey of DNS server software for the .com TLD made by
Dan Bernstein:

This works with DNS packets footprinting and only provides a very
rough overview.
I have contacted Bill Manning, who did for years a detailed survey
on the revDNS tree and also made statistics about DNS server versions.
Maybe he has some uptodate and a bit more detailed data with regards
to server versions. A BIND8 from Bernsteins survey may be a bind-8.2.2
from December 2000 as well as a bind-8.4.1 from October 2003.
