If that is really what PKIX is doing, then I agree it makes sense.

PKIX is using 2050 as the cut-over year.  I think S/MIME should use
the same.

Hmmm. I'd rather stick with whatever they're doing in PKIX, since
we're
going to be putting our signatures in PKIX-style certs, not generic
X.509
certs. What do others think?
