Yahoo Groups did this 3 years ago. As far as I can tell they have
changed their practice (I can only speculate that the growing popularity
of greylisting caused too many failures).

Yes, I pretty sure they did. But its also got some aggressive:

    "are you still subscribe? click here to begin receiving
     the mail again."

confirmation thing, that seems to be based on the number of errors it sees over time, but the mail still does come in inbetween these random "restart" messages. Doesn't appear to be your typical subscription reminder. Its odd, and I didn't bother to analyze it.
