I should have said something about client authentication. One significant
difference between SMTP and XMPP is that XMPP has a much simpler topology:
an XMPP entity (server or client) can't emit traffic "from" another
entity, in the way that occurs with email forwarding and relaying. It is
reasonable to restrict "from" addresses used by message submission clients
(RFC 4409 seciton 6.2) but not other uses of SMTP except by special
arrangement.
