For the distinction John is raising, I assume that the text in

   Section 4.3.2.  Message Transfer Agent (MTA) of RFC 5598

   https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5598.html#section-4.3

is not sufficient.  Modifying it to support the distinction would 
represent the highest point of departure among RFC texts.
