That thread ended three years ago. Last month, the IETF published RFC 8823
which extends the ACME protocol
to issue S/MIME certificates. I doubt that Alexey wrote it purely as an
hypothetical exercise.
How can ietf-smtp help in paving the way for such an adoption?
Honestly, by not wasting time with diversions that are unlikely to do anything
useful.
Pretty much every MUA other than webmail already has S/MIME support. If a few
of them let their users get
certs with one click, it might make a difference.
