FYI.  The U.S. Army used carrier pigeons during WWI to carry messages.  Worked quite well considering the working conditions.

Speaking of which, why is it that references to the early years of the Internet seem to downplay the fact that the ARPANET was originally developed by the U.S. DEFENCE Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA)?
