There has been some debate in this forum on whether DNSxLs are an appropriate
tools for stopping spam. Whether or not IP-based blocking is a philosophically
appropriate method to use, every large scale ISP uses these lists as a first
line defense against spam. DNSxLs are a much-used and effective tool in
preventing the delivery of spam to the inbox and should be standardized to
reduce the cost of implementation of anti-spam measures. The draft outlines the
structure and functionality of DNSxLs, but does not dictate or require the use
of them. Moreover, it is not the role of this draft to outline the policies for
DNSxL listings and procedures for list management.
We at Cloudmark support draft-irtf-asrg-dnsbl-07 on the Standards Track and
believe that standardization of DNSxL queries and response codes eliminates
confusion, eases tool writing, aids email administrators, and reduces
everyone's mail infrastructure operating cost.
