What about the following:

<MIMEARGS>
text/plain:maxwidth=80
</MIMEARGS>

Dear Koichi

thank you! That's the answer to my problem ... it does the job
perfectly. It's not always the prettiest to read, but it's much
easier than having the lines charging off the r/h edge of the screen.

I dunno why I'd never spotted it in the manual before, but having
checked up on it all, I also found the "quote" attribute, which
neatly puts quoted text in italics. Combining the two takes the
following format:

<MIMEARGS>
text/plain:maxwidth=80 quote
</MIMEARGS>

Many thanks to everyone for their help on this. It's useful enough
that even if I didn't have to rebuild my archives anyway, I'd do so
to roll out this feature!

Best wishes,
Claire
