Re: [Nmh-workers] The invisible mail folder

i have a hazy memory of MH development starting on V5
as part of an Office Automation project for the USAF,
concurrent with "ze Bland Editor", er, the Rand Editor.

amusing aside:

George Goble, the Art Arfons of Unix on Minicomputers, loved the rand
editor and he was obsessed with seeing how fast he could make it. he
and Peter Hallenbeck modified one of the DH-11s in his machine with
new UARTS along with a handful of ADM3A terminals to run at 19.2Kbps
and 38.4Kbps. with a parallel interface replacing the UART in an ADM3A
connected to a DR-11B on the machine end, they found that much above an
"effective serial line speed" of about 300Kbps the static ram doing
screen refresh ran out of cycles (the ADM3A was a TTL state machine -
no springhead to impede things). at that point, Peter designed a
"character mapped" display which sat on the Unibus. there was a movie
made of "unix starting up" which is classic but likely lost at this
point.
