I find that quite clutter-ful, with the []/<> being two characters to
indicate one thing, and the identical subject repeated.

presentation. (Like Ken, I liked trn's little context tree when viewing
a single Usenet article.)
I can't argue with you about the []/<> characters. As a user, I don't
really care about the subtle difference between them. I think Satyaki
(who implemented it) did.
Gnus also repeats the subjects, but collapses threads into a single line
followed by an ellipsis until you start reading the first message.
How does the Mutt presentation handle the Subject: New subject (was: old
subject) case?
