Reading this current thread has made is very obvoius how un-friendly
most
sites setup their email systems. Here at Imperial we don't allow
login names to appear in messages that leave this site though for
technical reasons we are forced to accept them. We ONLY support
inital.surname or some other unique string that the user determines is
their common , recognisable name.
Now, now, now. It wouldn't do to stiffle our individual creativity,
would it? :-)
If sites cannot even manage their email names in a sensible fashion,
how are they going to manage certificates?
Excellent question. And one of the reasons why I would not put a lot of
faith in the integrity of e-mail names. But the certificates may be
managed by the Finance and Administration or Security types, instead of
leaving it to the "flakey" technical types. Or perhaps better yet,
contract for the certificate management functions with a professionally
competent organization, and use an Organizational Notary to say who
should be granted a certificate.
