As I said, I intend to invent something decent -- but not this
week. I'm a bit busy. When I do have something, I'll let these lists know.

Nice news except for the undefined delay :-(.
Yes, ASN.1 goal and approach (separation of abstract spec and transfer syntax)
deserve good marks.
Yes, ASN.1 as it is specified/documented/implemented deserves bad marks
Yes, there exist a few decent ASN.1 compilers/interpreters that
have proven an unmatched contribution to productivity
Yes, however ASN.1, as it is, is an overkill for most small to medium
applications
Yes, we badly need a "something decent"
because the demand exist for an "abstract syntax" with accompanying
software tools for translation into transfer syntax
because NO existing solutions meets our requirements for small
e-payments secure applications
Yes, we need the Internet efficiency and pragmatic realism to achieve
the transformation of the sound objectives into decent specifications,
documentations and implementations.
Yes, as soon as these will exist, EBNF, labelled 7bits texts ... as well
as ASN.1 will appear as prehistoric pieces to be safed in a few museum.
I wish your boss will leave you time enough for this. I am
confident that from a sound basis/proposal the Internet will
produce quickly the long awaited specs and tools that will
be widely adopted even more quickly.
