RE: Use of ASN.1 in certificates

1995-07-31 10:33:00
I'm sure I'm the only one who does not know ASN inside and out, but a little
checking reveals that ASN stands for Abstract Syntaxt Notation. It is an ISO
standard, although the following layman's guide claims it is an OSI std: (?)

ASN.1 is both an ISO and a CCITT standard. The ISO docs are 8824 and 8825 while
the CCITT docs are X.208 and X.209 (I believe this are the correct numbers but
I do not have the docs handy to check).

Lots of standards are issued under the auspices of both ISO and CCITT. As for
OSI, it refers to a group of standards for networking rather than to a specific
standards organization.

Howewver, as I have already stated, I believe the best way to learn something
about ASN.1 is to leave these documents untouched. Get yourself a good book on
the subject instead. I have already recommended Steedman's ASN.1 book as my
favorite.
