Hi. Dave Balenson and I maintain the pem-dev mailing list. It appears
that UUNET redistributes this list via usenet news. UUNET is
subscribed to pem-dev as post-pem-dev(_at_)relay1(_dot_)uu(_dot_)net(_dot_)
More often than
we would like to count, messages inappropriate for the pem-dev list
("spam") are being sent to info-pem-dev(_at_)uunet(_dot_)uu(_dot_)net and are
ending up
on the list. The most recent example is below.
While the usenet news group may be preferable to some, it is our
belief that anyone interested in the goings-on on the pem-dev list
should be able to subscribe to the list directly. It is, after all, a
discussion about email. To that end, we are removing
post-pem-dev(_at_)relay1(_dot_)uu(_dot_)net from the pem-dev mailing list. We
would
like you to please remove any mechanism you have in place which allows
a posting to the usenet group or mail sent to
info-pem-dev(_at_)uunet(_dot_)uu(_dot_)net to be forwarded to the pem-dev
mailing list.
Removing the news group may be the right thing to do as it will then
be useless.
Anyone interested in subscribing directly to the pem-dev list should
send mail to pem-dev-request(_at_)neptune(_dot_)tis(_dot_)com(_dot_) All are
welcome.

While things can be done to the list management software to limit
posts from "unvetted" sources, it would involve increased manual
intervention on the maintainers' parts and might add a delay to many
messages. The most extreme modification would be to make this a
moderated list, but I don't think that the S/N ratio warrants that.
