User defined header record

1995-12-28 02:34:33

Does anyone know if there is any record that can be added to the
header of an email for user defined information that will be carried
in the headers when any reply/forward/bounce operation is performed.
I looked at RFC832/932/1032, and could not find anything that
satisfies the need, (other that the Subject: record.) The Message-id:
record comes close, but most sendmail MTA's change this record to a
machine defined record, and put the information into a Reference-to:
record, which is filtered from any reply/forward/bounce operation.

        Thanks for any help,

        John

BTW, the reason for the request is that the list moderator of the
learning-org (rkarash(_at_)world(_dot_)std(_dot_)com) wants to add a reference
number
to the first message of a specific discussion in the list. The idea is
that each reply to the list concerning this message should contain the
reference number so that the messages can be cataloged by reference
number. Of course, something like "Subject: [1234] Re: the list
subject ..." would work, but the Subject: record is editable under
most MUA's.
