Re: regenerating a 'from ' line with a proper datestamp

1996-08-21 11:10:33
Timothy Luoma asked,

| I've got a digest off an archive. The whole thing is one big file
| with 2500+ messages in it.
|
| I was able to make it into a usable mailbox format using formail,
| BUT the 'from ' line was created with a datestamp of today. This
| makes it look like all the messages were from today, which isn't
| right.
|
| The "Date:" line is still there, and still proper. Is there any
| (automatica) way to make a new 'from ' line with a datestamp that
| matches the 'Date: ' line of the same message?

Try

  formail -a Date: -ds

It will copy the contents of the individual Date: headers to the From_
lines it generates. Those may not be in acceptable format for your MUA,
though, as the man page for formail warns us, but it's a place to start.

Alternatively, train your MUA to look at the Date: headers instead of the
timestamp in the From_ line.
