AFAIK, lockfile -ml is just a shortcut for locking your mailbox (if it's
installed right ;) . You can replace it by lockfile /var/mail/gilles.lock
(and maybe some flags) and remove the lock with rm -f
However, this will only work if lockfile has the priviledges to write to
/var/mail
If this is not the case, you'll have to ask your sysadmin to reinstall
lockfile.
