Bounced mail and Bad Subscriber

1996-12-17 05:55:41

I'm sending this to the list since scouring the headers from a
list message revaled no admin address and the following bounced back to
me.

Subject: Bounced mail and Bad Subscriber

On my recent post I recived a bounced message (to be expected so
I'm just sennding you the bounce so you can take a look at it), but I also
recived what probally ammounts to spam from a apparently subscribed
address, that autoresponds to any mail sent to it. Needless to say I was
a little miffed, I will be sending them some mail right after this, but I
don't think much will come of it since it seems that the sender and the
site are one in the same. I have also included that mail so that you
might also take some action on that front.

Congratulations! You have successfully sent mail to Internet for Dummies
Mail Central. This means that you are now an expert mail user, at least
relatively speaking.

Your mail address, as seen from here, is:
        karrde(_at_)gats(_dot_)hampton(_dot_)va(_dot_)us

This response comes from a friendly robot, and was sent the moment your
message arrived to let you know as quickly as possible of your success at
sending mail. If your message asked a question or made a suggestion, we
will try and send a personal response, but we've been getting so much mail
that we can't promise to do so.

VISIT OUR WEB SITE: Finally, at last, the web site we promised over a
year ago is up. Visit us at http://net.dummies.com, and watch our site
grow, one hard-to-debug web page at a time. There's a home page for each
book, with corrections and updates.

ORDER BOOKS ON-LINE: You can order any of our books through our web site at
http://net.dummies.com (at lower than list price, even). No coffee table is
complete without at least one copy of each.

REGISTER YOUR BOOK: You can now register your copy of the book on-line
through the web site, a big help for those of us unable to find a pen and a
piece of paper at the same time.

If you're reading the first or second edition of "The Internet for Dummies"
you might want to look for the new third edition.

The third edition is completely revised and contains extensive
information about Eudora and Netscape, the most popular new Internet
applications, with more step-by-step instructions.

There's more information available on our web site at:

        http://net.dummies.com/toc-i4d3.html

If you bought a copy of the first or second edition within the past
month, you could reasonably go back to the store and ask them to swap
it for the third edition, since the first and second editions are
officially out of print.

Regards,
The Dummies Authors' Cabal

This reply is being mailed to both the RFC821 Envelope Sender (from the
SMTP MAIL FROM:<> field) and to the RFC822 Reply-To: or From: header field.
These addresses are:

                @coyote.rain.org:dnhunt(_at_)rain(_dot_)org
                karrde(_at_)gats(_dot_)hampton(_dot_)va(_dot_)us

This copy was mailed to:

                karrde(_at_)gats(_dot_)hampton(_dot_)va(_dot_)us

The mail system on these hosts and the MX records in the Domain Name System
should be set up to allow both responses to reach you. (The Envelope Sender is
used for mailers sending reports of delivery problems and the reply-to or from
fields are used when a recipient tries to reply to your mail). If one or both
messages don't reach you, then you should investigate because it means some
part of the puzzle is not set up correctly.

Note that our mailer is somewhat forgiving. Even if both copies do make it
back to you, that does not guarantee that the header of your message is
strictly "correct" per RFC822. If you are unsure about the correctness of your
header, check them against the grammar specified in RFC822 (FTP the file:
rfc/rfc822.txt from ds.internic.net).

The BBN Planet Staff hopes this service is useful. Please send any comments to
ops(_at_)bbnplanet(_dot_)com

Thanks!
