Has anyone encountered a problem with mail in their INBOX ending with a
series (as much as 1K) of null bytes?

Previous reports of this have generally turned out to be due to locking
problems. Do you have locallockfiles on those recipes that need them?
In particular, do all the recipes that write to the problem mailbox have
a second colon on the ":0" line of the recipe? If so, then it may be
another program that's failing to lock the mailbox before accessing it.
You say you use pine. Is it locking the involved mailbox on every access?
