What's not rfc822 about it?
The lack of at least a From Subject or Date header before the body?

It doesn't look like a message/rfc822 to me. If Pine doesn't always
display full headers, I guess it might take the "testing" line as an
unrecognized header it shouldn't display, and what you're left with is
a blank header and no message body to begin with.

I'd still imagine that you could get better throughput +and+ a more
readable recipe by doing all of the body with sed. Check out the a and
r commands.
You mean lose the echo's? Perhaps I'll compromise and just put them in a
here document or something :-) Point taken though.
