If you have mush or cares to install it,
and don't mind a little overhead :-) this script
might do it:
  #!/Home/stud/georg/bin/solaris/mush -F
  delete ${MAXNUM}-$
  quit

If yopu just set the environment MAXNUM to one more than
the wanted number of messages.

You may call it with
COMMAND='script >/dev/null 2>&1'
