IMHO, sounds more like you should spend the resources on fixing the POP
server problem instead. I've downloaded multimegabyte files with some
regularity and the only real problem I've ever had was speed, or if it was
a bad day, loss of connection while downloading, and having to re-establish
the retrieval.
Now, I can understand if the user's client or the POP server timeout during
the transmission, requiring a reconnect and repeated attempts to D/L the
message - but then, THAT seems like something which the user can contact
you and ask you to go through their spool and nab the biggie for them, at
their discretion.
But crashing servers. hmm...
BTW - *IF* you do decide you've got to futz with their mail in this
fashion, consider the possibility of making a secure webpage that allows
users to login and http/ftp transfer the message - refer to the URL/pw or
whatever in the notification message. This allows the person to get their
message on their schedule, rather than on yours.
I'd elect to fix the POP server problem tho...
