I've recently noticed that when a message is received from a local majordomo
list, the procmail log records the 'From ' as the owner of the list (as
defined in /etc/mail/aliases) rather than the original sender. Is this a
feature, bug, or possible installation problem?
Feature. The "From " pseudo-header contains the envelope-sender, not
the header sender. If a you or a program is bouncing a message as
incorrect, illegal, unwanted, etc (as opposed to replying), then you
should send the returning message to the envelope-sender, *not* the
header sender. This means you need to get the address either from the
Return-Path: header (if your MTA remembers to insert that line) or the
"From " pseudo-header.
