My procmail (v 3.10) log file usually contains the following error message
for incoming mail that was *successfully* delivered to my mailbox.
========================
procmail: Lock failure on "/usr/mail/ftilley.lock"
From XXXX(_at_)geocities(_dot_)com Wed Dec XX:XX:XX:XX 1997
Subject: re: /var/spool/mail
Folder: /usr/mail/ftilley
========================
This looks like a files permission problem to me. Here at Goodnet, we are
on NFS. There is one machine that processes outgoing email
(smtp.goodnet.com), a second machine that processes incoming email
(pop.goodnet.com, or mail.goodnet.com) and a third that the email incoming
mail and mailbox actually resides on (goodguy.goodnet.com).
Any info on why this lock failure occurs is appreciated. I suspect that
the procmail program that runs on smtp.goodnet.com does not have the
necessary write permissions to create a lock file in directory:
usr/mail/ on goodguy.goodnet.com
It could be that the head honchos at Goodnet made changes to the NFS system
after they had compiled procmail.
Direct comments to me (ftilley(_at_)goodnet(_dot_)com)
or to the list.
