There's something wrong with the locking on your system. What OS are
you running? Is the mailspool NFS mounted to the mailserver (i.e., the
machine(s) on which procmail runs is not (or sometimes isn't) the
machine where the mailspool disk is located)? What is the output of
"procmail -v"? And finally is this with a .procmailrc, or without? If
"with", are you sure the .procmailrc is using dotlocking where it
should be?

It's not using NFS to mount any directories associated with email.
I don't know about the output of procmail -v and I can't check
right now.
There is no procmailrc or .procmailrc being used. We are using
Sendmail aliases to route the emai.
I suspect a file locking problem too. One thing I notice is that,
if I do top while sending 64 quick emails, there are multiple
instances of procmail that run. Does that indicate anything.
This is a stock Caldera OpenLinux distribution. We are using
Sendmail/Procmail the way it comes installed.
As far as I can tell, the main problem is when email comes very
quickly for the same person. It seems like there is a race
condition that isn't being handled properly by lock files.
I need to examine the log files. Do you know where they are or,
at least, what the names are so I can find them.
Finally, is there a good source of information on using procmail?
I appreciate the quick response.
