I haven't had any difficulty with this combination.  I have root
capability, but aside from installing the IMAP daemon, it wasn't needed.

Assuming you have IMAP4 or IMAP4rev1, you should be able to use procmail
pretty much the way you would with local mail access: as a pre-sorter
(on the remote host).  You'll just need to configure procmail and your
IMAP client to use the same directory for folders.
