It's documented in the source. The FAQ has an explanation and there's
a separate web page with the relevant snippet from the source. (You
don't need to understand C to read it.)

You could volunteer to rewrite them :-)

Actually, if you have ideas about what improvements would be needed,
I'd love to include them in the FAQ one way or another.
