Why?
Because people might want to treat automatic replies specially (like,
not send an automatic reply :^) and this is the commonly used way of
identifying them. It's also nice to hosts which want to give
human-to-human one-to-one mail a higher preference (although this use
is marginal nowadays, I guess).
