race condition with sendmail

1999-12-06 14:53:02
I have a UNIX shell account on a DEC Alpha machine (that
hosts a domain of mine). The pop3 server is on a different
machine, whose local alias is "pop". I process
messages with procmail and send most of them to my
default mailbox on pop for access via pop3 and
my desktop machine.

There is a race condition (I guess that's what
it is; I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm
using a misnomer) when two or more pieces of mail
arrive at the server simultaneously. I sometimes
ultimately do get such messages, but they are
contained inside of four or five recursive bounce
messages. Some text that accompanies one of these
bounce messages says something like this:

Reporting-MTA: dns; xxxxxxx xxxxxxx.net
Arrival-Date: Mon, 6 Dec 1999 10:23:59 -0500 (EST)

Final-Recipient: RFC822; xxxxxxx(_at_)pop
Action: failed
Status: 5.5.0
Last-Attempt-Date: Mon, 6 Dec 1999 10:26:00 -0500 (EST)

The owner of the server is perfectly willing to fix this
problem, but he is at a loss as to how to proceed.
Can anyone offer advice?

Oh - it's also possible that the pop3 server is on the same
machine as my account - I don't actually know for sure that
it is a different machine. But I think I remember him
telling me that once.
