I'm sorry, you're crediting me with _much_ better understanding than
I own.
I had no idea of the real reason the "obvious" recipe needs the -1
offset, and was trying to figure out, all at once, why that might
have been necessary, and why it might not have been adequate.
My guessing was obviously without foundation. I should have marked
it as blind guesswork. Sorry for wasting your time with it.
