If thats the case, how can I get qmail and maildirs working correctly
(as detailed in my first message)? I don't see a need to risk all my
mail just yet.

I didn't understand this recommendation either.  At work we use a SuSE
6.1 Linux box as a mail server, and procmail v3.11pre7 came with it
and is still being used with absolutely no truble.  Oh, and qmail, of
course, which was the point of this mail.
