The /var/log/maillog shows that the email was received but that is about
it. The files don't change time at all. Haven't been accessed since
5-2-01.

Does _anything_ happen? For example, does anything show up in the mail
log (/var/log/maillog on most machines)? Do the access times on the
requested files change (ls -u)?
