When giving out my email address to corporate websites likely to sell my
email address, I typically use the form:
<corporation>_tracer@<domain>
Where <corporation> is the name of the company I'm giving my email address
to, and <domain> is my domain name where all email ends up in the same
mailbox.
My approach is to use plussed addresses, so I don't have to set up
specific aliases for every different thing to which I submit an email
address. paul+isp(_at_)it(_dot_)ca is my email address on the isp- mailing
lists,
I'm paul+squirrelmail(_at_)it(_dot_)ca on those lists, etc. If I don't set up
explicite handling for the stuff to the right of the '+', procmail
still plops it into my default folder.
Mail for bram+imdb(_at_)xspace(_dot_)com and bram+ebay(_at_)xspace(_dot_)com
will still get
to you, and you can parse the plussed part of your address within your
procmailrc for things you want handled in special ways. (I.e. if you
receive email to bram+ebay(_at_)xspace(_dot_)com that didn't come from ebay.com,
you can set EXITCODE=67. ;> )
Unforunately, spammers rarely include the actual To: address in their
emails -- is it possible to pass the RCPT_TO line from the SMTP
session from Sendmail to Procmail so that I can capture who has put me on
a list?
And read Era's FAQ entry, "Why Headers Don't Matter", including the link
to the Sendmail FAQ.
