Re: starting procmail

From: Ruediger Stark <starkr(_at_)students(_dot_)uni-mainz(_dot_)de>

my university (Mainz) has the very nice feature, that you can
cofigure the forwards of you account via webpage. Therefore the
.forward in my $home lost it's function completly. I tried to contact
the unix-support of the university, but all i got was 'procmail doen't
work. thats it!' as answer. Since this is wrong (procmail is installed
and works perfectly - manualy at least - i'd like to ask if there is
a possibility to start procmail in another way than using .forward,
or if there is any chance for me to find out how i can use .forward
without any help of the admins. I tried for several week, but i just
got some lousy answers with never more than two sentences.

I am only guessing, but I suspect they are using smrsh or some
such to block procmail's use. The University of Heidelberg was
doing that when I last used that account in 1997. That means
you won't be able to use procmail except by trickery and
subterfuge, other than at the command line.

As for the admins' helpfulness, willkommen in Deutschland.
I'm being (only bit) facetious - I see that you're German.
But I've lived in Germany 6 years, and my experience is that
the universities, while quite good in general, do tend to
be a fat-cat bureaucratic haven for "teacher"-types who'd
really rather be abusive than enlightening to their students.
Oh, well, that's for another forum besides the procmail list.

I see at least two choices, if smrsh is the problem. (I suppose
you might get an answer if you ask them if they're using it.) The
first is to use .forward to send the uni mail somewhere that
allows procmail, and use it there. The second, that worked at
Heidelberg, was to use elm's "filter" package to execute procmail.
Devious, I know. (Thanks, you-know-who-you-are, for suggesting
that to me privately in 1996.) You'd put a call to filter in the
.forward -- assuming *it's* allowed (and, no, I don't know the
syntax for doing so) -- and then have in your whatever-file-
filter-looks-at a one-liner to exec a .procmailrc.

I didn't write this email.
