I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what procmail version you're
using, or whether you're running your procmail script from /etc/procmailrc,

little nudge in the right direction?
Perhaps you can nudge us with a concise excerpt from your .procmailrc?
I've read the man pages, and still to no avail. I'm obvoiusly missing
something. I would like the mail to go into /var/spool/mail/$username/new/.
For clarity, you should indicate whether that dot ACTUALLY trails the
filespec, or if you're just adding it to end the sentance. Procmail DOES
act differently based on whether the dirname is suffixed with "/" vs. "/.".
See 'man procmailrc'. Search around for "maildir folder"
Also, it should create those folders if they don't exist when an email is
received, correct?
Assuming the path you specified above is trailed by "/", not "/.", then
procmail should. Provided that the user which procmail is running as has
any rights to create files there.
Have you considered running with VERBOSE=ON in your procmailrc?
