Sometimes it takes a while for someone to have the time to respond.

Understood. I'm a (relative) newbie to this list stuff and I wasn't sure if
I was only talking to myself! Thanks for taking the time to reply.

However, you could be providing some additional details, like at least the
version of procmail you're using (from `procmail -v`) and the operating
system and its version.

Quite. procmail v3.21 2001/06/29
Linux kernel version 2.2.19-7.0.8 RedHat distro

Anything that gets fixed by rebooting the server is unlikely to be a
problem specifically with procmail. Procmail probably just tickles it
more often because of reading each entire incoming message into memory.

Great. So there's nothing intrinsically wrong with my rc? That would be
another possible cause eliminated.

At a guess, you've got a bad memory chip, which isn't causing any problems
until the high-water mark of memory usage reaches some threshold; and it's
often procmail receiving some large message that finally sends it over.
But that's only a guess. There's some pretty good freeware memory testing
software available if your hardware is PC-compatible.

It's running on an old Digital Prioris XL S100 server (Pentium 100) Any
recommendations for software would be appreciated.
