Well, actually they're not, because there is no '.' on board.
Something like (\>|[.]) is a more accurate as what-comes-
after-an-email-address, but still not perfect.
Of course [.] could be written as \. but when you store it in a
variable, it will become a '.' which matches any character.
I have read of a way to force escapes of special characters in a
variable holding a regexp, but can't remember where I read it.
Maybe it was a '??' syntax variant.
