RE: How to convert to 8 bit mime format

2002-04-16 02:16:00

At 2:02 PM -0400 4/15/02, Edward Wildgoose is rumored to have typed:

I am aware that sendmail does 7 to 8 bit conversion, hence my statement
that I am using procmail not sendmail. The mention of procmail was there to
indicate that my complete setup is Procmail as LDA + Postfix as MTA. All
clear so far?

If Postfix doesn't do 7 -> 8-bit conversions, maybe you need to change
your MTA? (You have something against sendmail maybe?)

Hmm, might be the only way. Most of the systems are setup now and I have
gained the postfix experience, so reluctant to change now. Also although I
haven't studied the manuals for sendmail, I think it may be an all or nothing
conversion? Perhaps by filtering via procmail I could make it selective just
for certain people?

Also I am quite clear that Procmail does not "Do" a lot, certainly not
complex extraction of attachments (wouldn't it be nice if it did though...),

No, it _wouldn't._ procmail is designed for a specific task, and expanding

OT: I think it would be nice because....
a) Lots of people want to do filtering on the body, ie exclude attachments
b) People want to filter mail if it includes certain attachments, etc

However, this is OT please don't respond if you disagree, it was not the
purpose of this mail to draw anyone out on this issue!

Oookkk...I'm honestly not sure exactly what you're trying to do ("7-bit to
8-bit" covers a LOT of ground, including UUENCODE, you know?), but if you

Thanks for the hints. The complete goal is to *absolutely* minimise download
time for users dialing up using an Iridium satellite system.

http://www.mailasail.com is my website, please feel free to pop along and see
what we are offering so far.

There is extensive use of demime type stuff, but at some point you want to
allow users to send attachments, so if it were possible to re-encode in 8bit
rather than 7 bit this reduces download time by about 1/3 - well worth having

I guess that I am looking for full sendmail functionality, but on a per-user
basis in case of broken clients.

Thanks for your help all
