odd procmail results

2002-04-26 06:50:10

I'm currently using procmail-3.21.-1 on redhat 6.2. I've been experiencing
some odd results when using my procmail rules. So I was hoping that someone
could explain something to me. One of my procmail rules was matching
strings in the Subject line that had no relation to the strings it was
compared to (regex wise).

Without modifying the rules, I tested the procmail rule in a test file
against the dumped SPAM folder:

formail -s procmail -m test-procmailrc < SPAM

All the mail was dumped into the SPAM folder (as it has been performing). I
then broke up the rules into smaller rules to try and identify the bad
string causing valid emails to get dumped. This created some odd results.
All of a sudden, only half of the emails were tagged as matches.

But all I did was separate 1 rule into 3 smaller ones! When I recombined
them togeter again, the original results occured once again.

Can someone please explain what this means? I'll gladly post both versions
of the recipe is so desired.

-Rob
