If you've escaped the left bracket and therefore you haven't opened a
bracketed set, then a right bracket is an ordinary character and doesn't need
escaping. But that's not true of parentheses (you have to escape a right
parenthesis for it to be taken literally, even if there has been no left
parenthesis), and it doesn't *hurt* to escape the right bracket, so a habit of
escaping right brackets whenever they are literal is not a bad thing.
