IIRC, ascii mode translates line endings, as Andrew said, and is
supposed to be able to figure out the correct line ending according to
the target system. Binary makes an image copy (i.e. changing nothing).
No clue on MacBinary.  For a variety of reasons, I've always stayed away
from ascii mode and always use binary. The target file is exactly the
same as the source. Then I change line endings if needed (almost never).
If you try Andrew's method and the translation works, then that's a
potentially simpler method. Whatever floats your boat.
