BOGUS.root.xxx files

2002-12-11 13:52:05
Hello all,

Our mail server periodically fills up the /var/spool/mail directory with
files called "BOGUS.root.xxx." Over time, if left unattended, the "xxx"
part grows to include all permutations of upper- and lower-case letters,
numbers, dashes, and underscores. We have learned the hard way to keep
an eye on this phenomenon, for if they grow too large, a simple "rm -f
BOGUS.root.*" will not work and we have to go in and manually do "rm -f
BOGUS.root.a*", "rm -f BOGUS.root.b*", ad infinitum until all are
cleared. I've written a quick shell script to remove these files when
they are of a manageable size, and I check regularly. But my true wish
is to find out A) What causes these to appear, and B) What can we do to
stop them from coming? They seem to happen with no rhyme or reason. I
may come back from the weekend and see only three of these files. Then
some days I come in and overnight dozens upon dozens have appeared. Any
assistance would be very greatly appreciated.

Thank you kindly in advance,

Anjanette O'Rourke
